CHAPTER SEVEN

‘THAT sounds like a great idea, Ned.’ Brandon walked from his consulting room to the reception area with Ned Finnegan, the mayor of Lewisville, as the man continued to chatter about the Christmas street party and billy-cart events due to take place just before Christmas.

Clover had been in town now for two weeks and each day he was finding it more and more difficult to keep his distance, to look upon her as merely another colleague. To say she was brilliant with the patients was an understatement and along with his mother, Marissa and Ned’s wife, May, the maternity centre programmes were up and running.

He’d already received feedback from the women of the community, each of them not only extolling the virtues of the support but also giving glowing reports about Clover.

‘She’s so natural and genuine with everyone,’ one woman said.

‘So giving. She really wants to help, to make sure we can cope,’ another reported.

On a professional level Brandon was pleased to hear such reports, but on a personal level it only drew him closer to the woman he wasn’t sure he should get involved with. To hear people saying she was natural and genuine should have promoted confidence in him but instead it only made him more cautious.

Everyone had taken to Lynn like a duck to water, eager to involve her in the community, and look what had happened there. She’d duped them all and left the town without a word of goodbye. Therefore it was impossible for him to let go so easily, to trust again so quickly, and with the way Clover played her cards close to her chest, caution was still his main theme.

‘By the way,’ Ned continued, raising his voice to combat the loud crying from little two-year-old Ryder in the waiting room. ‘How are things going with your billy-cart? Construction should be completed sooner rather than later,’ Ned went on, barely stopping to draw breath. ‘I was so happy to hear you’d asked Clover to be your partner. A great way to involve her in the community. Anyway, as mayor, don’t forget I still need to sight your final billy-cart design.’

Brandon nodded. He’d been dragging his heels where the billy-cart was concerned as he was hesitant to be alone with Clover. Talking, discussing, building. He’d asked her on a whim, wanting to do exactly as Ned had suggested and get her involved to see how she fared, but now, given the fact that his dreams about her were becoming more intense, he wasn’t sure he’d made the right decision.

‘I’ll get them to you soon.’

‘Tomorrow,’ Ned said pointedly, raising his voice again to combat little Ryder’s loud crying. The toddler’s poor mother, Tan, was trying desperately to calm him down but the child refused to listen.

Just then, Clover came out of her consulting room, talking to her patient, a bright smile on her face. Brandon ignored the way his gut immediately tightened at the sight of her. She was his colleague and it was imperative he maintain a professional distance.
